Empowering communities through sustainable development

The Pastoralist Goals Foundation (PGF), established in 2014, is a dedicated community development organization. We are deeply committed to empowering communities across pastoralist regions by fostering sustainable development, education, and resilience from the ground up.

Strategic Areas of Focus

Our work centers on vital areas such as advancing girl-child rights and education, promoting environmental stewardship, advocating for indigenous self-determination, securing land and tenure rights, and championing human rights advocacy. By partnering with local leaders, our focus remains on empowering communities to overcome structural challenges and achieve self-reliance.

Our Mission: Empowering Communities

SDG 4: Quality Education

Supporting the education of indigenous Pastoralists, ensuring that they can also be competitive, by providing mentorship and career guidance, support STEM Education in Schools and infrastructure development support

SDG 5: Gender Equality

Championing the inherent right of every girl to learn and thrive, breaking down barriers to equality in pastoralist communities.

SDG 13: Climate Action

Integrating ancient wisdom with modern solutions to empower pastoralist communities to adapt and build resilience against climate change.

SDG 15: Life on Land

Cultivating environmental stewardship and preserving traditional ecological knowledge for the sustainable future of Northern Kenya's landscapes.

SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

Advocating for secure land rights and self-determination, ensuring justice and dignity for indigenous pastoralist communities, and protecting traditional wisdom and institutions.

1. Girl Rights Project

In many pastoralist communities, girls face significant barriers to education and personal development due to cultural practices, economic challenges, and limited access to resources. By addressing these issues, we aim to break the cycle of poverty and inequality.

2. The Greening Schools Initiative

This is our flagship project, and is tri-activity. We actively engage students in environmental conservation, helping them understand and protect the natural world around them through hands-on tree planting and environmental education. Simultaneously, we address critical needs like access to sanitary health by providing dignity kits, ensuring girls can attend school comfortably and confidently. We also provide mentorship, and career guidance.

3. Indigenous Knowledge Project.

We are actively working to integrate indigenous knowledge into contemporary climate preparedness efforts, recognizing its invaluable role in building climate resilience within Northern Kenya’s pastoralist communities. A core aspect of this involves documenting traditional ecological knowledge, which has sustained these communities for generations. This documentation serves as a critical foundation for integrating indigenous early warning systems into broader climate action strategies. We also run our weekly, Indigenous Knowledge Series where we share information about useful indigenous trees and herbs.

4. Securing Rights & Self-Determination

This crucial program is dedicated to ensuring justice, dignity, and autonomy for pastoralist communities. We actively advocate for secure land and tenure rights, recognizing their ancestral lands as the bedrock of their livelihoods and culture. Simultaneously, we champion their fundamental human rights, addressing marginalization and ensuring equitable access to vital services. Our work also empowers indigenous communities to exercise self-determination, preserving their rich cultural heritage and enabling them to shape their own futures, leading to truly sustainable and dignified outcomes.

5. Emergency Response

Pastoralist communities are disproportionately impacted by climate change, facing more frequent and intense droughts and erratic rainfall patterns despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions. These climate-induced hazards have severely disrupted their traditional way of life: seasonal calendars and regular weather patterns are now unreliable, and vital livestock movement routes and access to water sources are drastically affected. This devastation has led to massive livestock losses, escalating household poverty levels and food insecurity. In response, we provide quick, yet vital, emergency relief services to address these immediate needs.
